Beginners Fabric Choices

Your new to sewing and want to jump into the deep end embarking on a new and exciting project. But before you start, stop and think about your fabric choice.

What fabric should I be working with?
As a beginner you want to have positive results with your sewing projects, you don’t want to be disappointed or put-off and frustrated by working with a difficult fabric. Think about choosing fabrics that are going to have positive results and allow you to produce professional looking items.

You will want to choose woven fabrics (if you require stretch choose a woven fabric with minimal stretch). I suggest working with fabrics of medium weight and using fibres such as cotton, poly cotton, linen and lightweight upholstery fabric. These fabrics will be stable and easy to work with, allowing you to achieve professional results.

What about prints and patterns?
Sure, go for it choose a pattern. However I would recommend that you choose a random pattern (large or small print). You want something that does not require pattern matching, as this is another slightly complicated step that if completed incorrectly can ruin the look of a project. Start with patterns that don’t need matching and you won’t be upset with the finish look.

Patterns are also a great way to hide mistakes and stitching, perfect when your a beginner. So choose a random pattern in a cotton, poly cotton fabric and get started.

Beginner Fabric Choices

How to choose the best fabric when you’re new to sewing

You’re new to sewing and ready to dive into an exciting new project — but before you begin, it’s worth pausing to think about your fabric choice.

Choosing the right fabric as a beginner can make the difference between a project that feels enjoyable and rewarding, and one that becomes frustrating or disappointing. Starting with beginner-friendly fabrics will help you achieve neater, more professional-looking results and build confidence as you develop your skills.

What Fabric Should Beginners Sew With?

When you’re learning to sew, the goal is to set yourself up for success. Difficult fabrics can be discouraging, especially when you’re still getting used to controlling the fabric, guiding seams, and understanding how your sewing machine behaves.

As a beginner, it’s best to start with woven fabrics. If a pattern requires stretch, choose a woven fabric with minimal give, rather than a knit.

I recommend working with medium-weight fabrics made from stable fibres, such as:

  • Cotton

  • Poly cotton

  • Linen

  • Lightweight upholstery fabric

These fabrics are easy to handle, don’t shift excessively under the machine, and respond well to pressing — all of which help you produce a clean, professional finish.

What About Prints and Patterns?

Absolutely — prints can be a great choice for beginners.

However, I recommend starting with random patterns, either small or large in scale. Avoid fabrics that require pattern matching, such as stripes, plaids, or strong directional prints. Pattern matching adds an extra layer of complexity, and if done incorrectly it can detract from the finished garment.

Random prints allow you to focus on learning construction techniques without worrying about alignment, making them ideal for early projects.

As an added bonus, patterned fabrics are excellent at hiding small mistakes or uneven stitching, which can be reassuring when you’re still learning. A cotton or poly cotton fabric with a random print is a fantastic place to start.

Start Simple, Build Confidence

By choosing stable, beginner-friendly fabrics, you’ll give yourself the best chance of enjoying the sewing process and finishing projects you’re proud of. As your confidence grows, you can gradually introduce more challenging fabrics and techniques.

Start simple, trust the process, and enjoy learning to sew.
