Fit Your Sewing Patterns

One-Day Fitting & Pattern Alteration Workshop

Is your bust pulling, are your necklines gaping, or are your armholes cutting in? Learn why your handmade clothes don’t fit, and how to fix the pattern so they do.

In this one-day sewing fitting class in the Macedon Ranges, about an hour from Melbourne, you’ll learn to diagnose fitting problems on your own toile, make the adjustments, and transfer those changes back to your sewing pattern.

You’ll work through everyone’s fitting challenges as a group, so you’ll learn on different bodies, not just your own.

Before class, you’ll send me photos of your pattern and toile. I’ll review your fit and concerns in advance, so we can start fixing straight away on the day.

Max 6 students · Your toile reviewed before class · 6 hours of hands-on tuition

Date: Saturday 5 December 2026, 10:00am-4:30pm
Skill level: Confident beginner to intermediate
Price: A$250

NZ$305.04

In this workshop, you’ll learn:
– How to assess the fit of a toile and recognise common fitting problems
– How to read drag lines, balance and grain to understand what the garment is telling you
– How to tell circumference, length and shaping issues apart
– How to pin and test fitting changes on the body
– How to transfer those corrections accurately back to your paper pattern
– How to true seams, darts and pattern edges after alterations
– A repeatable fitting process you can use on future patterns

About your teacher
I’m Aneka Truman, founder of Made to Sew. I’ve been teaching sewing and pattern cutting since 2013, and my YouTube channel has over 535,000 subscribers. My background is in the fashion industry, and I draft and sew all my own patterns.

What’s included:
– 6 hours of hands-on tuition with Aneka
– A personal pre-workshop review of your toile and pattern
– Individual fitting guidance
– Pattern paper for alterations
– Tea and coffee

Suitable patterns:
Tops, dresses, skirts and jackets in woven fabrics.
If you’re unsure whether your pattern is suitable, you’ll receive guidance after booking.

Skill level & requirements:
You should already be comfortable using commercial sewing patterns and sewing a basic garment.
This is a fitting and pattern-alteration workshop, not a learn-to-sew class.

What to bring:
– Your chosen commercial sewing pattern (the original paper pattern)
– A prepared toile made from that pattern
– Your sewing machine (optional), if you’d like to sew in adjustments
– Pencil, eraser, ruler, sticky tape and paper scissors
– Tape measure and pins
– Notebook and pen
– Your lunch, there is a 30-minute break (alternatively there are cafés available 2 mins away)

Before the workshop:
After booking, you’ll receive guidance on choosing a suitable pattern and preparing your toile.
Please send photos of your prepared toile, with any particular fitting concerns, by Saturday 28 November. I’ll review these before the workshop and let you know if there’s anything to prepare or bring.
Please arrive with your toile ready so we can spend the day on fitting and pattern alterations rather than construction.

Date & venue:
